Valley of Hell:

The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said:

Wail” is the name of a valley in Hell. When a disbeliever is thrown into it, will take him forty years to reach its bottom. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  further advised:

(Translation of meaning) Seek refuge from the Well of Sorrow [Jubbul Huzn]. The audience asked: O Messenger of Allah what is this Well of Sorrow? He replied it is a valley in Hell from which Hell itself seeks refuge seventy times a day. Allah has created it exclusively for  hypocrite men of knowledge (Bihaqi).

About Hell itself Allah has revealed in the Quran:

(Translation of meaning) [“But they will soon meet [the valley of] Ghayy” (Maryam: 59)].

According to Hadrat Abdullah bin Masud (RadhiAllahu Anhu), Ghayy is a valley in Hell reserved for those who follow their lusts. Hell is not only extraordinarily wide and long it is deep as well.

Hadrat Abu Hurairah (RadhiAllahu Anhu) narrated that once we were sitting in the company of the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  when we heard a sudden sound of a fall down.  He asked us: Do you know what was this sound? The Companions replied that Allah and His Prophet know better. Then He said a heavy boulder was thrown into Hell seventy years ago. It has reached its bottom now (Muslim). About the ordeal of the inmates of Hell it is narrated thus in the holy Quran:

(Translation of meaning) And those who disbelieve are driven unto hell in troops (Az-Zumar : 71)

At another place Allah said:

(Translation of meaning) [“Thou wilt see the guilty on that day linked together in chains. Their raiment of pitch and the Fire covering their faces” (Ibrahim: 49-50)].

These culprits will suffer all sorts of torture and they will be enveloped by fire from all sides and their crimes will be visible on their faces. Quran depicts this in this way:

(Translation of meaning) [“The guilty will be known by their marks, and will be taken by the forelocks and the feet” (Ar-Rahman: 41)].

The inmates of Hell will undergo a metamorphosis. Their size will not be the same as in their worldly existence. Their proportions will rather be enlarged so that they could suffer maximum amount of torture. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

(Translation of meaning) Every tooth of a disbeliever will be equal to the Mount Uhud and the thickness of their skin will be equivalent to the distance of three days journey (Muslim). The ordeals faced by the inmates of Hell will also differ from person to person. There will be a variety of forms of torture. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) informed that:

(Translation of meaning) The lightest type of the torture of the inmates of Hell will be that one will be made to wear shoes and laces of fire. It will make the brains of the wearers boil like a boiling cauldron on fire. Others may be subjected to harsher forms of ordeal but this one will be the lightest ordeal of Hell (Muslim). About the fire of Hell the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) explained that

(Translation of meaning) The fire of Hell was ignited for the initial one thousand years until it became red; then it was ignited for another one thousand years until it became white; then again it was ignited  for another one thousand years until it became black.  Now the existing colour of Hell is black (Tirmizi, Ibn Majah). There are three categories of persons who will be consigned to Hell first: First, the hypocrite warriors [Mujahid]; second the hypocrite men of knowledge [ulama]; and third, the hypocrite spenders [charity-givers]. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) informed that

(Translation of meaning) On the Day of Resurrection the first who will be reckoned with shall be the martyr. He will be presented before Allah Almighty and reminded of the bounties of Allah given to him. He will recall them. Then he will be asked: What did you do with them? He will say I fought in Your way till I laid down my life. Allah will say to him: You are telling a lie. You fought so that people call you a brave man so did call you a brave man. Then he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. Then another person will be brought who pursued knowledge and taught it to others. He had also learnt Quran. He will be interrogated about what he did with his knowledge. He will say I sought knowledge and I taught to others, I also learnt the Quran. Allah will tell him: You are telling a lie. You sought knowledge so that people call you a man of knowledge and you learnt Quran so that people call you a scholar of Quran. Now people did call you a knowledgeable person and a scholar of Quran. He will also be thrown into Hell on his face by the command of Allah. Then that person will be presented to Allah whom He had blessed with abundance and material wealth. He will also be reminded of the bounties of Allah and he will recall them. Then he will be asked about what did he do with all this? He will reply that he spent all his wherewithal that was dear to him in the way of Allah. Allah will tell him that he is a liar. He spent so that people call him generous. So people have called him generous. He will also be thrown into Hell by the command of Allah.

So each deed of a Muslim should be dedicated purely and solemnly for the sake of Allah. To achieve acceptance of Allah every deed howsoever great must be motivated by sincerity. Otherwise, all his good deeds will go in vain. Allah abhors shirk. Even if it is the inclusion of your own self. May Allah save everybody from it. Ameen! The diet to be given to the inmates of Hell will be horrible and extremely tormenting.  For instance, they will be given Zaqqum [fruit of a wicked tree] to eat, and the wash of pus, sores and ulcers to drink, which will be extremely stinking and burning hot. The inmates will not be able to consume them and if they consume their intestines will melt and they will get scorched. It is stated in the Quran that:

(Translation of meaning) [“Lo! With Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire. And food which choketh [the partaker], and a painful doom” (Muzzammil: 12-13)].

In another place Allah declares:

(Translation of meaning) [“Lo! The tree of Zaqqum. The food of the sinner. Like molten brass, it seetheth in the bellies. As the seething of boiling water” (Ad-Dukhan: 43-46)].

About the tree of Zaqqum, it has been further revealed that:

(Translation of meaning) [“Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum? Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.  Lo! It is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell. Its crop is as it were the heads of devils. And lo! They verily must eat thereof, and fill [their] bellies therewith” (As-Saffat: 62-66).

According to a saying of the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam),

(Translation of meaning) Even if a drop from the tree of Zaqqum falls upon earth it will be enough to spoil the life of the dwellers of earth. What about those whose food it will be. (Tirmizi, Ahmad, Ibn Majah).

The drink of the inmates of Hell has been described in the Quran in these words:

(Translation of meaning) [“Therefore hath he no friend here this day.

Nor any food save the wash [of pus and sores]. Which none but sinners eat” (Al-Haqqah: 35-36)].

In another place it is stated:

(Translation of meaning) [“ . . . Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers Fire. Its tent encloseth them. If they ask for showers, they will be showered with water like to molten lead which burneeth the faces. Calamitous the drink and ill the resting-place!” (Al-Kahf: 29)

In continuation of this description it has been further revealed:

(Translation of meaning) [“Before him is Hell, and he is made to drink a festering water. Which he sippeth but can hardly swallows, and death cometh unto him from every side while yet he cannot die, and before him is a harsh doom” (Ibrahim: 16-17)].

In another place it is revealed:

(Translation of meaning) [“Therein they taste neither coolness nor [any] drink. Save boiling water and a paralysing cold” (An-Naba: 24-25)].

[“. . . boiling fluid will be poured down on their heads. Whereby that which is in their bellies and their skins too, will be melted. And for them are hooked rods of iron” (Al-Hajj: 19-21)].

The Messenger of Allah; said:

(Translation of meaning) When boiling water will be poured over the heads of the inmates of Hell it will flow down to their bellies through their heads and whatever is in their bellies will flow out through their feet. Then the person will revert to his shape as he was (Tirmizi, Ahmad). The boiling water of Hell that can melt the stones if poured over the mountains will be given to the inmates of Hell for drinking.

Allah declares:

(Translation of meaning) [“Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming [Doomsday]? On that day [many] faces will be downcast. Toiling, weary. Scorched by burning fire. Drinking from a boiling spring” (Al-Ghashiyah: 1-5)].

The inmates of Hell will be made to wear the dress of fire which in itself will be a torment. Allah declares:

(Translation of meaning) [“. . . But as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them” (Al-Hajj: 19)].

It was further explained thus:

(Translation of meaning) [“Their raiment of pitch and the Fire covering their faces” (Ibrahim: 50)].

The sternest punishment will be given to those who calls others to do good but he himself never did any good; and restrained others from doing wrong but himself committed wrong. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

(Translation of meaning) A person will be brought and will be thrown in Hell where he will take rounds like an ass takes rounds of a grinding stone. The inmates of Hell gathering around him will ask: O such and such were you not calling others to do good and detracted them from doing evil? He will reply yes I called others to do good but myself did not do good and I restrained others from doing evil but I did not restrain myself from evil (Al-Bukhari, Ahmad).

One condition that the inmates of Hell will pass through will be that they will look towards the inmates of Paradise and will also converse with them but this condition will only maximize their torture. They will ask the inmates of Paradise to share with them their bounties but the inmates of Paradise will reply that now even the cool breeze of Paradise is prohibited for you. It is stated thus in the Quran:

(Translation of meaning) [“And the dwellers of the Fire cry out unto the dwellers of the Paradise; Pour on us some water or some of hat wherewith Allah hath provided you. They say: Lo! Allah hath forbidden both to disbelievers [in His Paradise]” (Al-A’raf: 50)].

Similarly, the dwellers of Hell will ask the wardens of Hell to arrange for the remission of their punishment. In the words of the Quran:

(Translation of meaning) [“And those in the Fire say unto the guards of Hell: Entreat your Lord that He relieve us of a day of the torment. They say: Came not your messengers unto you with clear proofs. They say: Yes, verily. They say: Then do ye pray, although the prayer of disbelievers is in vain” (Ghafir: 49-50)].

Their entreaty to the chief warden of Hell, named Malik, has been narrated thus:

(Translation of meaning) [“And they cry: O Malik! Let thy Lord make an end of us. He saith: Lo! Here ye must remain. We verily brought the Truth unto you, but ye were, most of you, averse to the Truth” (Az-Zukhruf: 77-78)].

Ultimately, they will say in desperation:

(Translation of meaning) [“. . . Whether we rage or patiently endure is [now] all one for us; we have no place of refuge” (Ibrahim: 21)].

Another condition of the dwellers of Hell when they will ask the Lord to send them back to the world so that they could do good deeds, has been described in the Quran in these words:

(Translation of meaning) [“Our Lord! We have now seen and heard, so send us back; we will do right, now we are sure” (As-Sajdah: 12)].

To them Allah will reply thus:

(Translation of meaning) [“So taste [the evil of your deeds]. Forasmuch as ye forgot the meeting of this your day, lo! We forget you. Taste the doom of immortality because of what ye used to do” (As-Sajdah: 14)].

The inmates of Hell will again entreat Allah Almighty in these words:

(Translation of meaning) (“Our Lord! Reprieve us for a little while. We obey Thy call and will follow the messengers.” (Ibrahim: 44)].

The inmates of Hell will again beseech:

(Translation of meaning) [Did ye not swear before that there would be no end of you?” (Ibrahim: 44)]

(Translation of meaning) [“[saying]: Our Lord! Release us; we will do right, not [the wrong] that we used to do. (Fatir: 37)].

The inmates of Hell admitting their guilt and ill-fate will again approach Allah Almighty, Allah will say to them:

(Translation of meaning) [Did not We grant you a life long enough for him who reflected to reflect therein? And the warner came unto you. Now taste (the flavour of your deeds), for evil-doers have no helper. ] (Fatir : 37)

Then the inmates of hell will say:

(Translation of Meaning) [“They will say: Our Lord! Our evil fortune conquered us, and we were erring folk. Our Lord! Oh, bring us forth from hence! If we return [to evil] then indeed we shall be wrong-doers” (Al-Muminoon: 106-107)].

Allah Almighty will rebuke them and will say:

(Translation of meaning) [“He saith: Begone therein, and speak not unto Me” (Al-Muminoon: 108)].

At this the inmates of Hell will lose all hope and will gather no courage to entreat Allah again.

The judgments regarding the award of Heaven and Hell will be an eternal Determination and the disbelievers and the polytheists will remain in Hell for ever. Allah has declared:

(Translation of meaning) [“Lo! Those who disbelieve, among the People of the Book and the idolaters, will abide in fire of hell. They are the worst of created beings. [And] lo! Those who believe and do good works are the best of created beings. Their reward is with their Lord: Gardens forever. Allah hath pleasure in them and they have pleasure in Him. This is [in store] for him who feareth his Lord” (Al-Bayyinah: 6-8)].

In another place Allah declares:

(Translation of meaning) [“As for those who will be wretched [on that day] they will be in the Fire; sighing and wailing will be their portion therein. Abiding there so long as the havens and the earth endure save for that which thy Lord willeth. Lo! Thy Lord is doer of what He will. And as for those who will be glad [that day] they will be in the Garden, abiding there so long as the heavens and the earth endure save for that which thy Lord willeth: a gift unfailing” (Hud: 106-108)].

A differentiation must be made here between the phenomenon of being placed in Hell and the phenomenon of abiding in Hell for ever. The eternal Hell is reserved only for the disbelievers and the polytheists. Nevertheless, some believers may also be put into Hell because they might have committed certain great sins without repenting or violated the rights of fellow-beings. Allah will put such persons into Hell for some time to purify them. Then He will take them out of Hell by His grace and put them into Paradise. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

(Translation of meaning) Those who deserved Paradise will be admitted to Paradise and those who got Hell will be thrown into Hell. Then Allah will proclaim that if anybody has got belief even equal to a grain of mustard they should be taken out of Hell in a condition that they would have become completely black. Then, they will be dipped into the “River of Life” whereby they will bloom just as a sprout comes out of a grain (Al-Bukhari & Muslim).  According to another tradition of the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

(Translation of meaning) Anybody who recited “La ilaha illallah” and who possesses righteousness even equal to a grain of barley in his heart shall be taken out of Hell fire. And that man will also be taken out of Hell who recited “La ilaha illallah” (there is no god but Allah) and had righteousness in his heart even equal to a grain of wheat. And that man will also be taken out of Hell who recited “La ilaha illallah” (there is no god but Allah) And that man will also be taken out of Hell who had righteousness even equal to an atom (Al-Bukhari & Muslim).
