RIGHTS OF HUSBAND

To create love between a husband and wife and to secure a Muslim family, Shariah has introduced some rights on each of them which give happiness and pleasure in life. The rights of a husband on his wife are as follows:

  1. 1. OBEDIENCE: It is Wajib (obligatory) on a Muslim woman to obey her husband if he asks her for something except that which is a sin. This is because there is no obedience to a creation in violation of commandment of Allah. When Hazrat Muhammad (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) was asked “which is the best woman?”, the Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: Translation of Meaning: “The one who obeys her husband when he asks her for something, and when he sees her, he becomes happy.” (Ahmad)
  1. 2. IF THE HUSBAND ASKS WIFE TO COME TO BED SHE AGREES FOR THIS:

If the husband calls his wife to come to bed and she refuses to do so, such woman deserves Allah’s displeasure and punishment. The Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

Translation: “When a person asks his wife to come to bed and she disagrees so she would spend the whole night in disobedience and the angels would curse her till the morning.” (Ibn Hibban)

  1. 3. Should not observe voluntary fasts without her husband’s permission:

The Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

Translation: “It is not lawful for a lady to fast (voluntary fasts) without the permission of her husband when he is at home; and she should not allow anyone to enter his house except with his permission”. (Bukhari)

  1. 4. TO PROTECT THE PROPERTY OF HUSBAND AND SHOULD NOT SPEND EXTRAVAGANTLY:

The Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

Translation: “If a woman spends from her grains of the house without any conflict (It means according to tradition like a handful to a beggar which is permitted by the husband as known by habit) so she would get rewards for spending, and the husband will also get rewards for his earning, and the treasurer would also get the similar, and one’s reward would not be lessened by the other.” (Muslim)

  1. 5. TO GIVE ISLAMIC TRAINING TO CHILDREN AND MAKE THEM HABITUAL OF GOOD BEHAVIOUR:

The Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

Translation: “Every one of you is a caretaker and every one of you would be answerable about his subjects. The ruler is the caretaker and he would be asked about his subject, a person is the caretaker of his wife and he would be asked about his subject, the woman is the caretaker in her husband’s house and she would be asked about her subject, the servant is the guard of his owner’s property and he would be asked about his subject.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

  1. 6. TO ACQUIRE BEAUTIFICATION AND DECORATION: It is important for a woman to beautify herself for her husband.

There are numerous rights other than these, such as to fulfill her promise with her husband, to respect his feelings, to behave well with him, to mourn after his death, and to help him in good deeds like prayer, fasting and behaving well with parents.

The Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

Translation: “May Allah have Mercy on such person who wakes up at night and prays Tahajjud and wakes up his wife and if she does not wake up so sprinkles some water on her face so she would wake up and may Allah have Mercy of such woman wakes up at night and prays and wakes up her husband too and if he does not wake up so sprinkles his face with water.” (Abu Dawood)
