Mizan:  The Weighing Balance

On the Day of Judgment the deeds of the mankind will be weighed on a weighing balance [Mizan]. Allah proclaims:

(Translation of meaning) [“And We set a just balance for the day of Resurrection so that no soul is wronged in aught. Though it be of the weight of grain of mustard seed, We bring it. And We suffice for reckoners” (Al-Anbiya: 47)]. In another place in the Quran it is pronounced:

فَأَمَّا مَنْ ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ (6) فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَاضِيَةٍ (7) وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ (8) فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ (9) وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ (10) نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ (11) (القارعة: 6-11(

(Translation of meaning) [“A day wherein mankind will be as thickly-scattered moths. And the mountains will become as carded wool. Then, as for him whose scales are heavy [with good works], He will live a pleasant life. But as for him whose scales are light, the Bereft and Hungry One will be his mother. Ah, what will convey unto these what she is! – Raging fire” (Al-Qari’ah: 4-11)].

It is narrated by Hadrat Ayesha (RadhiAllahu Anha) that once she began crying on recalling the horrors of Hell. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked: Why are you crying O Ayesha! I recalled the Hell so I’m crying, she replied. Then she asked him: Will you remember the members of your household on the Day of Judgment? The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)replied: There will be three occasions when nobody will remember others—first, at the time of weighing of the deeds on the balance [mizan] until he knows whether his good deeds are light or heavy; second, at the time of giving of the record of deeds, until he knows whether it is given to the right hand or left hand or from behind his back; and third, when the bridge way is placed above the Hell (Abu Dawood).

Kauthar: The Pool of Abundance

The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said about kauthar (the pool of abundance):

«حَوْضِي مَسِيرَةُ شَهْرٍ، مَاؤُهُ أَبْيَضُ مِنَ اللَّبَنِ، وَرِيحُهُ أَطْيَبُ مِنَ المِسْكِ، وَكِيزَانُهُ كَنُجُومِ السَّمَاءِ، مَنْ شَرِبَ مِنْهَا فَلاَ يَظْمَأُ أَبَدًا» (متفق عليه).

(Translation of meaning) “The length of my Pool shall be equal to the length of one month’s journey. Its water will be whiter than milk. It will smell sweeter than the musk. Its bowls will be like the stars in the heaven. Whosoever drinks of it once shall never be thirsty thereafter” (Al-Bukhari & Muslim).

Hadrat Anas (RadhiAllahu Anhu) narrates that :Once we were sitting around the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). We saw him dozing for some time.  Then he raised his head smiling. Those present asked him for reason for his smile.

He said right now a Surah has been revealed to me. Then he recited Surah Al-Kauthar. Then he asked: Do you know what Kauthar is?  We said Allah and his Messenger know better. Then he explained that it is a water channel which Allah has promised for me. It will be full of goodness. It will be in the form of a pool. My ummah [followers] shall arrive at it on the Day of Judgment. Its bowls will be of the size of the stars in the heaven. One from this gathering will be removed from it. I shall intervene saying that he is my follower. But I will be told that you do not know what accretions and innovations he added to your religion after you (Muslims).

As-Sirat: The Bridge Way

Every Muslim also believes that on the Day of Judgment every person will have to transit through the Bridge Way [As-Sirat]. This Bridge Way shall be placed over the Hell. For the disbelievers it shall be finer than hair and sharper than the edge of the sword. Underneath will be snatchers who will snatch the disbelievers and the sinners and drag them to the pit of the Hell.  Without any exception all persons, even the apostles, the righteous ones and the believers and disbelievers, and those to be reckoned and those not to be reckoned, all shall have to transit through it. God Almighty has proclaimed :

وَإِنْ مِنْكُمْ إِلاَّ وَارِدُهَا كَانَ عَلَى رَبِّكَ حَتْماً مَقْضِيّاً (71) ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا وَنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيّاً (72) (مريم: 71 ، 72)

(Translation of meaning) [“There is no one of you but shall approach it. That is a fixed ordinance of thy Lord. Then We shall rescue those who kept from evil, and leave the evil-doers crouching there” (Maryam: 71-72)].

The easy transit through the Bridge Way shall depend on the nature of one’s deeds. Some people will pass through it with the speed of lightning; some like the blow of wind; but some will pass through it staggeringly, sometimes falling into the Hell below but then rescued and put back on it again until they will be able to cross it over. Then they will thank God Almighty for their safe transit. The Day of Judgment will be a day of retribution. Everybody will be compensated fully for his deeds. The oppressed will get redressal of their grievances. That day the coins of silver and gold will have no worth, only the currency of good deeds will count. A person may have a lot of good deeds to his credit but if he oppressed the people and deprived them of their rights then his good deeds will be distributed among the owners of the rights. If the account is not settled still the bad deeds of others will be credited to his account to tilt the balance against him and ultimately he will be thrown into the Hell.

On the Last Day, the believers will be ridden of all mutual ill-will and recriminations. Their souls will become purified and sublimated. All this will be due to the mercy and boundless grace and beneficence of God Almighty.
