Hashr: Gathering of Mankind

A Muslim also believes, that on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will gather all human beings in one place. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

(Translation of meaning) On the Day of Resurrection all human beings will be assembled on a barren plain (Al-Bukhari & Muslim). According to another tradition, the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said: On the Day of Resurrection the people will be assembled in a state that they will be barefoot, without clothes and uncircumcised just as they were born in the first instance. Hadrat Ayesha (RadhiAllahu Anha) asked him O Messenger of Allah will the men and women see each other in this condition. He replied: O Ayesha, the matter on that day will be of such hardship that nobody will think of looking at each other (Muslim).

The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) described the state of Hashr in these words: On the Day of Resurrection people will be divided into three groups—some people will be walking on foot; some will be riding; and some will be walking on their heads. When asked how the people would walk on their heads he replied that One Who taught them to walk on their feet will also enable them to walk on their heads (Tirmidhi).  On that day the angels will give the believers the happy tidings of Allah’s pleasure of them and their admission to the Garden. Thus Allah proclaims:

(Translation of meaning) [“Lo! Those who say: Our Lord is Allah, and afterward are upright, the angels descend upon them, saying: Fear not grieve, but hear good tidings of the paradise which ye are promised. We are your protecting friends in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. There ye will have [all] that your souls desire, and there ye will have [all] for which ye pray. A gift of welcome from the Forgiving, the Merciful” (Fussilat: 30-32)].

A believer knows that the matter of appearance before Allah is a significant matter and that day will be of extreme hardship and tribulation. That day people will be frightened and without senses. This scene has been described in the holy Quran in these words:

(Translation of meaning) [“O mankind! Fear your Lord, Lo! The earthquake of the Hour [of Doom] is a tremendous thing. On the day when ye behold it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling and every pregnant one will be delivered of her burden, and thou [Muhammad] will see mankind as drunken, yet they will not be drunken, but the Doom of Allah will be strong [upon them]” (Al-Hajj: 1-2)].

One cannot imagine the hardship of the Day of Resurrection. As the sun will be nearer their heads they will be perspiring profusely. Every man will be judged according to his individual deeds. Allah’s messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said

(Translation of meaning) The Sun will become so near to the people that it will stand at a distance of one mile only. The people will be sweating according to their deeds; Some people will be standing deep in sweat up to their heels; and some people will be standing deep in sweat upto their knees, while some people will be deep in sweat up to their middles, and some people will be down in sweat up to their mouths (Muslim).

At the same time, amidst these horrors there will be some people who will be immune from all trouble resting under the shade of the Throne of their Creator. The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

(Translation of meaning) There will be seven categories of persons who will be in this state of comfort whom Allah will shade under His shadow on a day when there will be no shade except His shade:

  • The just ruler.
  • The young man who grew up in devotion to Allah.
  • The man whose heart is attached to the mosque.
  • The two persons who joined each other and parted each other for the sake of Allah.
  • The man who was enticed by a woman of status and beauty but declined.
  • The man who gave alms and concealed it so his right hand did not know what was spent by his left hand.
  • and the man who remembered Allah in loneliness so his eyes became filled with drops.
