No specific supplication has been reported from Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam for drinking of zamzam water. However Hadhrat Abbdullah bin Abbas RadhiAllahu anhu used to recite this supplication:

Allahumma innee as’aluka ilman nafe’an wa rizqan wase’an wa shifa’am min kulli da’a.

Translation: O Allah I ask You to bestow me with beneficial knowledge, extensive provision and cure from all illness. (Musannaf Abdul Razzaq).

Dua while performing Sayi

Prior to starting Sa’i one should recite this supplication:

Innas safa wal marwata min sha’aaerillah, abda’u bema bada’Allahu bih.

Translation:

“Indeed Al-Safa and Al-Marwah are from the places of worship of Allah…” “I begin with what Allah began with.” (Muslim)

In each round of Sa’i between Safa and Marwah one should pray facing the Holy Ka’abah praising and glorifying Allah Ta’ala. One should first say “Allahu Akbar” three times followed by this supplication:

Translation: “None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent. We return, repent, worship and praise our Lord. Allah fulfilled His promise, aided His Servant, and single-handedly defeated the allies.” (Muslim)

No specific supplication has been reported while performing Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. However, some of the Prophet’s companions; Hadhrat Ali, Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar and Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood RadhiAllahu Anhum used to recite this supplication:

Rabbighfir warham wa Antal A’azzul Akram.

Rabbeghfir warham wa Antal A’azzul Akram.

Translation: O Allah! forgive me and have mercy on me. You are the Almighty and Generous. (Musannaf Ibne Abi Shaibah)

Besides the above one can recite from among the supplications contained in the Holy Quran and Sunnah as one pleases.

Dua at Arafat

The day of Arafah has a very special significance in Islam. In a tradition Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

Ma min yaumin aksara min an youtiqallaho fihe abdam minannare min yaume Arafa wa innahu layadnu summa yubahi behemul malaikatu fayaqulo ma arada haulaa’e

Translation: There is no day when Allah Ta’ala sets free more servants from Hell than the Day of ‘Arafa. He (Sub’hanahu wa Ta’ala) draws near, then praises them to the angels, saying: What do they want?  (Muslim).

Arafat is a place where prayers are most likely to be answered by Allah Ta’ala. In a tradition Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

Khairud dua’ae dua’au youme Arafa.

Translation: The best of supplication is the supplication of the Day of `Arafah. (Tirmizi)

Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam kept on saying Sub’hanAllah, Allahu Akbar and La ilaha illAllah and supplicating from Zuhr Salat to Maghrib Salat. (Muslim).

Therefore a person performing Hajj must be busy in supplicating by heart at this blessed place, in addition to recitation of the Holy Quran, doing Zikr, repenting, seeking forgiveness from Allah saying Allahu Akbar and la ilaha illAllah etc. He should invoke Allah’s blessings on the Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam. He should repeat talbiyyah, and supplicate for him in addition to supplicating for his relatives and beloved ones. In a tradition, Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

Yughfaru lilhajje walamenis taghfara lahu alhajja

Translation: A person performing Hajj is forgiven and the one for whom he seeks forgiveness is also forgiven. (Mustadrak Hakim)

On the day of Arafah, Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wasallam used to repeatedly recite this supplication:

Translation: ‘There is no god but Allah, alone without any partner. The Kingdom and praise belong to Him and He has power over everything” (Muwatta)

Translation:  I have turned my face towards Him, Who created the heavens and the earth, following Abraham’s religion, the true in faith, and I am not one of the polytheists. My prayer, and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the Universe, Who has no partner. That is what I was commanded to do, and I am one of the Muslims. O Allah it comes from You and is given to You.

Then slaughter saying Bismillah Wallahu Akbar. If the animal is slaughtered on behalf of another person, the slaughterer should utter his name saying Allahumma taqabbal min (Name of person). (Muslim)

Dua before meeting Wife

Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

Translation:

“If anyone of you, when intending to have a sexual intercourse with his wife, says:

Bismillahe, Allahumma jannibnash shaitana wa jannebish shaitana ma razaqtana.

‘and if the couple are destined to have a child (out of that very sexual relation), then Satan will never be able to harm that child.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Translation:

Oh Allah, keep the devil away from us and keep the devil away from that which You provide for us.

Dua after Sneezing

Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu Anhu narrated that Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

Translation:

If anyone of you sneezes, he should say Al-Hamdu Lillah‘ (Praise be to Allah), and his (Muslim) brother or companion should say to him, ‘ YarhamukAllah ‘ (May Allah bestow his Mercy on you). When the latter says ‘Yar-hamuka-llah”, the former should say, ‘ YahdeekumAllahu wa yuslihu balakum ‘ (May Allah give you guidance and improve your condition).

Narrated Abu Hurairah: When the Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) would sneeze, he would cover his face with his hand or with his garment, and muffle the sound with it. (Tirmizi)

Iyas b. Salama b. al-Akwa reported that his father reported to him that he heard Allah’s Apostle when person sneezed in his presence saying to him: May Allah have mercy upon you. And he then sneezed for the second time and Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to him: He is suffering from cold (and no response is necessary). (Muslim)

* * *

Answer to Non-Muslim’s Sneez

Abu Musa (RadhiAllahu Anhu) reported:

The Jews used to intentionally sneeze in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) hoping that he would say to them: يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ YarhamukAllah (may Allah have mercy on you),’ but he (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) would respond with: يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ “Yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum (may Allah guide you and render sound your state of affairs).” [Abu Dawud and At- Tirmizi].

Dua upon Wearing Clothes

Hadhrat Sahl bin Mu’az bin Anas narrated from his father that Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said: If anyone puts on a garment and says:

Allahumma lakal hamdo Anta kasautanihe, as’aloka min khairehi wa khaire ma sune’a lahu, wa aauzo beka min sharrehi wa sharre ma sune’a lahu.

Translation: O Allah, praise be to You! as You have clothed me with it, I ask You for its good and the good of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made. (Abu Dawood, Tirmizi)

Dua at Meeting

Hadhrat Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu Anhu narrated that Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “No group gather in a sitting in which they do not remember Allah, nor sent Salat upon their Prophet, except it will be a source of remorse for them. If He wills, He will punish them, and if He wills, He will forgive them.” (Tirmizi)

In light of this hadith we conclude that we should mention Allah Ta’ala in our assemblies and should invoke Allah’s blessings on His prophet Muhammad SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam.

Hadhrat Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu Anhu narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever sits in a sitting and engages in much empty, meaningless speech and then says before getting from that sitting of his:

But he treated the chief by reciting something, and the sick man recovered whereupon he gave him thirty sheep and gave us milk to drink (as a reward). When he returned, we asked our friend, “Did you know how to treat with the recitation of something?” He said, “No, but I treated him only with the recitation of the Mother of the Book (i.e., Al-Fatiha).” We said, “Do not say anything (about it) till we reach or ask the Prophet (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) so when we reached Madinah, we mentioned that to the Prophet (in order to know whether the sheep which we had taken were lawful to take or not).

Dua after committing A Sin

Abu Bakr (RadhiAllahu Anhu) narrated: I heard the apostle of Allah (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) saying:

When a servant (of Allah) commits a sin, and he performs ablution well, and then stands and prays two rak’ahs, and asks pardon of Allah, Allah pardons him. (Abu Dawood, Tirmizi)

He then recited this verse:

And those who, when they commit indecency or wrong their souls, remember Allah” (Al-Qur’an 3:135).

Dua To keep away Whispers of Shaitan

  • Seeking refuge in Allah Ta’ala from devil. (Abu Dawood, Tirmizi)
  • Azan (Muslim)
  • Azkar reported from Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wasallam and recitation of the Holy Quran.

Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wasallam said:

Translation: Do not make your houses as graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited. (Muslim)

Likewise, things that chase away the devil are supplications of morning and evening; supplication while entering the house and that of going outside ones house; supplications of entering to masjid and that of departing from masjid etc that are authentically reported from the holy Shari’at, for example recitation of Aayatul Kursi (aayah of throne) at the time of sleeping, last two aayat of the Surah Al-Baqarah, etc.

1- Whoever says:

‘There is no god but Allah, alone without any partner. The Kingdom and praise belong to Him and He has power over everything’,

Whoever says this supplication one hundred times a day, it is the same for him as freeing ten slaves. One hundred good actions are written for him and one hundred wrong actions are erased from him, and it is a protection from Shaytan for that day until the night. No-one does anything more excellent than what he does except someone who does more than that.” (Bukhari)

Likewise, Azan also chases away the devil.

Dua in case of Helplessness OR Un-wanted Event

Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi wasallam said:

Translation: A powerful believer is better and more bellowed to Allah Ta’ala than a weak believer and both are good. Pursue the thing that may benefit you seeking help from Allah Ta’ala and do not sit helplessly. If you suffer a loss then do not say if alone I would have done so and so, rather say قَدَرُ اللَّهِ وَمَا شَاءَ فَعَلَ “QaddarAllahu wa ma sha’a fa’ala” Allah’ Ta’ala destined and whatever He desired did. This is because the word of “if alone” opens the door wide for satan to interfere in the affairs of a Muslim. (Muslim)

Allahumma Fa ayyoma Mu’menin sababtohu, faj’al zaleka lahu qurbatan ilaika yaumal Qeyamah.

Translation:

O Allah, for any believing servant whom I curse make that as a source of nearness to Thee on the Day of Resurrection. (Al-Bukhari, Muslim).

How Should a Muslim Praise Another Muslim?

Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaikhi Wasallam said if a person desires to praise his friend (provided that he knows well about that person), he should say:

“Ahsebo fulanan (name the person) wallahu haseebohu, wala azakki alallahe ahadan ahsebohu in kana yalamo dak kada wa kada”

Translation:

I think (him to be) so, and Allah is the one Who will take his accounts (as He knows his reality) and none can sanctify anybody before Allah but (he appears) to be so and so. (and that only if he knows well about that person)” (Muslim)

What to say if one hears sound of a Cock or Barking of a Donkey?

Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

Translation of Meaning: “If you hear the sound of cock, ask Allah’s bounty saying this supplication:

Allahumma innee as’aloka min fadh’lik.

(O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty)

This is because it has seen an angel.

And when you hear the sound of a donkey, say:

Aauzu billahe menas shaitanir rajeem.

“I seek refuge with Allah from the Accursed Shaitan.”

This is because it has seen Shaitan. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Khutba-E-Juma (First)

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness and upon Him we rely. We ask Him to protect us from the evil of our selves and the shortcoming of our deeds. Whom so ever Allah guides nobody can lead him astray and whom so ever Allah leaves to stray, nobody can guide him to the straight path. And we witness that there is no god but Allah and that Mohammad is His servant and His messenger, whom He sent with true religion as a bearer of good tidings and as a warner of (punishment) before the Hour comes. Whosoever obeys Allah and His messenger he is on the straight path and whosoever disobeys them he has strayed and he will not harm anybody except himself and he may never harm Allah. The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best way of life is that of the Prophet Muhammad’s way of life (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam). The most evil of the matters are those which have been invented (having no proof in Quran and Sunnah) and each invented matter is a deviation from the right path and each deviation leads to the hellfire.

I seek refuge with Allah from satan the outcast; in the name of Allah, the most beneficent the most merciful.

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

Translation of Meaning: O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salât (prayer) on Friday (Jumu’ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allâh [Jumu’ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salât (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing), That is better for you if you did but know! (9) Then when the (Jumu’ah) Salât (prayer) is ended, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allâh (by working, etc.), and remember Allâh much, that you may be successful (10) And when they see some merchandise or some amusement [beating of Tambur (drum) etc.] they disperse headlong to it, and leave you (Muhammad SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) standing [while delivering Jumu’ah’s religious talk (Khutbah)]. Say “That which Allâh has is better than any amusement or merchandise! And Allâh is the Best of providers.” (11) (Al-Jumu’ah: 9-11)

May Allah bless us and you with the great Quran. I seek pardon from Allah for me and you and for all the Muslims. Surely Allah is bounteous; generous, King, The Ever-Benign, the compassionate, the merciful.

Khutba-E-Juma (Second)

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the entire universe. He is the most Beneficent, the most Merciful and He is the Master of the Day of Judgment. May peace and blessings of Allah be upon His messenger Muhammad, his children and his companions all of them.

I seek refuge with Allah from the satan the outcast. In the name of Allah, the most beneficent the most merciful. Allah says:

Translation of Meaning:

O you who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allâh, but do that which they are commanded. (6)

Allâh says at another place:

Translation of Meaning:

That Day shall a man flee from his brother, (34) And from his mother and his father, (35) And from his wife and his children. (36) Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. (37) .

Allah says at another place:

Translation of Meaning:

It is He Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad SAW) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islâm), to make it superior over all religions even though the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh) hate (it).

Allah says:

Translation of Meaning:

Allâh sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) and also His angels (ask Allâh to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât[] on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad SAW), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As¬Salâmu ‘Alaikum)

O Allah, send Your blessings upon the Seal of prophets Hadhrat Muhammad, his rightly guided caliphs; Abu Bakr Siddeeq, Umar Farooq, Usman bin Affan, Ali bin Abu Talib and upon his wives i.e. mothers of believers and all the sahabas (Prophet’s companions) and Taba’een (Contemporaries of the Prophet’s companions) and upon those who came after them till the day of judgment. May Allah be pleased with them all.

O, Allah help those who helped the religion brought by Hadhrat Muhammad SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam and make us one of them and desert those who have deserted the religion brought by Hadhrat Muhammad SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam and do not make us one of them.

O slaves of Allah, May Allah have mercy on you.

Translation of Meaning: Verily, Allâh enjoins Al-Adl (i.e. justice and worshipping none but Allâh Alone – Islâmic Monotheism) and Al-Ihsân [i.e. to be patient in performing your duties to Allâh, totally for Allâh’s sake and in accordance with the Sunnah (legal ways) of the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam  in a perfect manner], and giving (help) to kith and kin (i.e. all that Allâh has ordered you to give them e.g., wealth, visiting, looking after them, or any other kind of help): and forbids Al-Fahshâ’ (i.e all evil deeds, e.g. illegal sexual acts, disobedience of parents, polytheism, to tell lies, to give false witness, to kill a life without right), and Al-Munkar (i.e all that is prohibited by Islâmic law: polytheism of every kind, disbelief and every kind of evil deeds), and Al-Baghy (i.e. all kinds of oppression), He admonishes you, that you may take heed. (An-Nahl:90)

Khutba-E-Nikah

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness and upon Him we rely. We ask Him to protect us from the evil of our selves and the shortcoming of our deeds. Whom so ever Allah guides nobody can lead him astray and whom so ever Allah leaves to stray, nobody can guide him to the straight path. And we witness that there is no god but Allah and that Mohammad is His servant and His messenger.

I seek refuge with Allah from satan the outcast; in the name of Allah, the most beneficent the most merciful.

Translation of Meaning:

O you who believe! Fear Allâh (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared. [Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always], and die not except in a state of Islâm [as Muslims (with complete submission to Allâh)].

Translation of Meaning:

O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women; and fear Allâh through Whom you demand (your mutual rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship)[]. Surely, Allâh is Ever an All¬Watcher over you. (1)

Translation of Meaning:

O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allâh and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth. (70) He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allâh and His Messenger (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) he has indeed achieved a great achievement (i.e. he will be saved from the Hell-fire and will be admitted to Paradise).

The Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

Translation of Meaning: “Marriage is part of my Sunnah”

He SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam also said:

Translation:

I marry women also? And he who turns away from my Sunnah, he has no relation with Me.

He SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam also said:

Translation:

Marry women who are loving and very prolific, for I shall outnumber the peoples by you.

Note: After Khutaba of Nikah, Qadhi (the person solemnizing the marriage) should in the presence of witnesses make Eejab-wa-Qubool (offer and acceptance between the couple). This should be followed by supplication for the couple. In Nikah one should observe austerity and abstain from such acts which are contrary to Sunnah or Quran. Mehr (Dower) should be affordable so that it can be paid easily, and it should be paid at any cost. It is preferable to pay the Mehr at the time of Nikah.

Beware! It is un-Islamic and un-ethical to demand dowry or cash from the family of bride. We should neither demand it nor encourage those who demand it.

Salat for a Deceased (Funeral prayer)

There are four takbeers in salat performed before burial of a person. After the first takbeer one should recite:

Sub’hanaka Allahuma wa behamdeka wa tabarakasmoka, wa ta’ala jaddoka, wala ilaha ghairuka.

Translation:

Glory and praise be to You, O Allah. Blessed be Your name and exalted be Your majesty, there is none worthy of worship except You.

After second takbeer, one should invoke Allah’s mercy upon His Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam reciting:

Translation: O Allah, bestow Your favor on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.

After 3rd Takbeer, one should recite this supplication:

Translation: O Allah, forgive those of us who are living and those of us who are dead, those of us who are present and those of us who are absent, our young and our old, our male and our female. O Allah, to whomsoever of us You give life grant him life as a believer, and whomsoever of us You take in death take him in death as a follower of Islam. O Allah! Do not deprive us of our reward for (supplicating for) him, and cause us not to go astray after him. (Muslim)

If the deceased is a minor boy, one should recite this supplication:

Allahumaj’alho lana faratan, waj’alhu lana ajran wa zakhran, waj’alhu lana shafe’an wa mushaffa’aa.

Translation:

O Allah, make him a forerunner (of good news) for us, and make him a source of rewards and a treasure. O Allah make him for us an intercessor, and one whose intercession is granted.”

If the deceased is a minor girl, one should say ij’alha and shafi’atan wa mushaffi’ah.

Then saying Allahu Akbar one should say Assalamo alaikum wa rahmatullah.

Dua Aqeeqa (after sacrifice)

Slaughter the animal saying Bismillahi Allahu Akbar, and then recite this supplication:

Allahumma hazehi aqeeqatu (name the child), taqabblho kama taqabbalta min Habeebeka Muhammadin wa Khaleeleka Ibraheem Alaihem assalato wassalamo, damoha bedamehee, wa lahmuha belahmehee, wa sha’roha besha’rehee, wa azamoha be’azmehee.

Translation:

O Allah, this is aqiqah of (name of child). Accept it as you had accepted from Your habeeb (beloved) Muhammad and from Your khaleel (friend) Ibraheem alaihimassalam. Accept its blood as a ransom for the child’s blood; its meat as a ransom for the child’s meat; its hair as a ransom for the child’s hair; and its bone as a ransom for the child’s bone. (Musannaf Abdur Razzaq)

Translation: O Allah! Set me apart from my sins (faults) as the East and West are set apart from each other and clean me from sins as a white garment is cleaned of dirt (after thorough washing). O Allah! Wash off my sins with water, snow and hail. (Bukhari, Muslim).

  • Innee wajjahtu wajheya lillazi fataras samawate wal ardha hanifan wa ma ana menal mushrekeen.
