Dua at the time of seeing off a Traveller

Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu Anhu narrated that Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam gave him a send- off saying:

« أَسْتَوْدِعُكُمُ اللَّهَ الَّذِي لَا تَضِيعُ وَدَائِعُهُ »  (أحمد ، ابن ماجه)

As’taudeokumu llahallazi la tadhi’o wa da’eohu.

Translation: ‘I place you in the trust of Allah, whose trust is never misplaced.’ (Ahmad, Ibne Majah)

  1. Salim bin ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (RadhiAllahu Anhu) reported: When a man was to set out on a journey, ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (RadhiAllahu Anhuma) would say to him: “Draw near so that I may bid farewell to you as Messenger of Allah (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to bid farewell to us. (The Messenger of Allah (SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to say:

«أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيمَ عَمَلِكَ»  (الترمذي)

Astaudeullaha deenaka, wa-amanataka, wa-khawateema amalik.

Translation: “I place your religion, your faithfulness and the ends of your deeds in the trust of Allah.”(Tirmidhi)

When Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam bid farewell to any person, he SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam would shake his hands with the traveller and would not release it until the traveller himself dropped the prophet’s hand.

  1. Hadhrat Anas RadhiAllahu Anhu narrated that once a person said to Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam that he wanted to set out on a journey and requested to preach him. Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said “Zawwak Allahut taqwa” May Allah endow you with piety. When he requested for more preaching, Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said “Wa ghafara zambak” May Allah Ta’ala forgive your sins. When he again requested for more, Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said “Wa yassara lakal khaira haisuma kunt” May Allah Ta’ala facilitate all good for you, wherever you may be”

«زَوَّدَكَ اللَّهُ التَّقْوَى , وَغَفَرَ ذَنْبَكَ , وَيَسَّرَ لَكَ الخَيْرَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ» (الترمذي)

Zauwadakallahut taqwa, waghafara zambaka, wa yassara lakal khaira haisuma kunta.

Translation: ‘May Allah endow you with taqwa (piety), forgive your sins and facilitate all good for you, wherever you may be.  (Tirmidhi)
